Modernizing MIT
Harvard Graduate School of Design Option Studio with Shane Coen
The studio proposed a detailed, contextually sensitive approach to the redesign of one of three sites on the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA. Emphasis was on finding parallels in the landscape with MIT's essential spirit of innovation. Projects were enhanced by frequent visits to the site and engagement with the MIT community.
I chose a site defined by three I.M. Pei designs, including the Green Building, the tallest in Cambridge. My intervention is based on creating a continuous landscape corridor beginning in the recently constructed quad north of the site, leading to the southern edge of campus at Memorial Drive and the Charles River. Anchoring the iconic Green Building, a plaza equipped with a programmable LED array and adaptive hardware tie-ins serves as an interactive tribute to the tradition of technological exploration and play.
